NACA River Fisheries

SAYERS MEADOW - RIVER WENSUM, LYNG.

The main focus of NACA’s early habitat restoration work which won us recognition with various awards and continues to stand as a
blueprint for others to follow. With three stages of work now
completed that have reprofiled the river channel and
created a superb sequence of riffle/pool habitats.
These features are proving to be just the
environment for the growth of young fish
and large numbers of specimen
barbel, chub, dace and roach
proliferate.

Our stockings of barbel
have proved an
outstanding
success with
many fish ranging
from 3 lb up to over 17 lb.

There is a limit of 35 anglers at the
owner's request, which is well suited to the small nature of the river and the swims on offer. All NACA members have the chance to fish this water as guests of season permit holders who must accompany them when they visit the fishery. There is a long waiting list for season permits.

SPARHAM HALL - RIVER WENSUM, LYNG

Upstream of the millpools at Lyng, this slower and deeper 1 ½ mile stretch of river offers a challenge to specimen hunters. Containing large bream known to exceed 11 lbs in weigh, chub running to over 6 lbs, roach to above 2 lbs, numerous double figure pike and the odd big perch. Comparatively under fished, this fishery has season tickets available and is intended to be taken on as NACA’s next ambitious river habitat restoration project with a view to restoring it as a roach fishery.

COSTESSEY POINT - RIVER WENSUM (Costessey to Drayton)

Once well known as one of England’s finest specimen barbel and chub fisheries, this stretch of river has more recently suffered from the effects of over-abstraction of water for the potable water supply. To help counter this NACA have recently completed an ambitious £30,000 first stage of habitat improvements designed to address the problem of its declining fish stocks. 1000 immature barbel have also been introduced and more fish will be introduced as soon as they are available.

This stretch of the river runs for around 1 ½ miles through open pastures. Stocks include barbel (currently to over 12 lb), chub over 6 lb, bream to double figures, carp over 20 lb and roach over 2 lb. A waiting list is in operation.
