whitlingham2012NACA attended this years Whitlingham Outdoor Festival opening day 5th May

Held at the flint barn at Whitlingham Broad it was a well attended event focusing on the heritage and culture of the Broads and the many activities that take place in the Broads area. The festival which runs from 5th to 20th May will be hosting loads of activities from rowing and canoes, fishing and sailing, cycling and ramblers trails plus many other exciting events.

NACA were busy as always at these events and attracted around 100 visitors to our stand with great interest in our invertebrate displays, which demonstrate the need for high water quality which provide the building block for the fisheries and fragile eco-system we and our members have spent the last 25 years protecting. The event provides the opportunity to present anglers as the caring conservationists we are, and promote the work we do for anglers in Norfolk, it also presents a great opportunity to meet and share interests and views on our wider conservation aims with others who care about our environment. We thank Clare Weller from the Broads Authority for inviting us to this years event and are looking forward to our next event with the BA at How Hill later in the year so watch this site for further details.

survey_map001Recent survey results show the shrimp distribution still to be very much in the Barton Broad locality yet some have been surveyed on the Thurne

The map shows that most of the sites being surveyed are still clear of Dikerogammarus but checks are still ongoing.

NACA is supporting the Environment agency where possible and at a recent meeting gave grass roots advice as to how to get the message across to the angling community, we believe it is vital that the message is put clearly how this can effect not just fisheries but the whole aquatic ecosystem in this region, we will continue to support the EA and all organisations to help stop the spread of the shrimp and welcome our members support in this matter. To view our recent information on Dikerogammarus and download the take action notice please follow this link here.

 shrimp-link We Need Your Help

Dikerogammarus villosus, now known as “the killer shrimp” has been identified in several places in the Norfolk Broads system, This invasive and aggressive species from Eastern Europe kills a range of native species, including young fish, and significantly alters ecosystems, this is a serious threat to Norfolk's fisheries and it must not be underestimated the potential damage this could bring to our fragile ecosystem. This is not just a fisheries problem but effects many aquatic species so please follow the links for more information to help stop this spreading to our upper rivers and stillwaters.

We urge our members to dry ALL nets and keepnets before and after every fishing trip drying is the only secure way to kill the shrimp that may have come into contact with fishing equipment

Final Announcement Bawburgh Lakes Fishery

Cemex the owners of  Bawburgh Lakes placed the fishery up for sale in September 2011 due to the uncertain economic climate, we were informed the sale was to proceed and be completed by the end of  November 2011 allowing us every opportunity to discuss terms with the new owners prior to our lease expiring in February 2012, however due to complexities of the sale it had looked increasingly likely that we would end our lease and close the fishery before any sale had been completed.

We are now however very pleased to announce that Bawburgh Lakes have been sold and that we have had detailed discussions with the new owners to the future of the fishery, we wish the new owners Bawburgh Lakes Ltd every success for the future and have offered them our full support and will be working with them over the coming years to ensure they continue to enjoy even greater success with the fishery. We are extremely pleased that members of our fishery management team will now work for the new owners and that the new owners will continue to build on the conservation aspects of fishery management which NACA have employed during our time at Bawburgh.

Norfolk Anglers Conservation Association will end its fifteen year management of the lakes on 29th February 2012, it is hoped the lakes will open on 1st March 2012 under the management of the new owners Bawburgh Lakes Ltd, we also hope to be able to provide contact details and links to their website from this website shortly.

Many of our members have expressed a frustration regarding the sale and being unable to know the outcome which we fully appreciate and understand, the particulars of the sale have been very complicated but we now hope this development will give confidence that this is the best outcome for the future of Bawburgh lakes fishery NACA are very excited that the fishery can now be managed and developed to its best potential by the new owners for all its members to enjoy.

Although we will continue to provide information for Bawburgh lakes on our website and links to the new website all membership applications and correspondence must be directed through to the new owners as NACA will not be responsible for managing the site from 29th February 2012

The support given to us during our fifteen years at Bawburgh has been fantastic and is very appreciated, Bawburgh Lakes were just one of many valuable conservation projects NACA continues to be involved with and we highly value the continued support we receive from our members of the Association. We work extremely hard at regional and national level to protect anglers rights in Norfolk and work endless hours to campaign on many consultative bodies which give anglers in this region a credible voice on issues that matter to the overall outcome of angling which at this moment is struggling to be heard in amongst the midst of current environmental needs that face us in Norfolk. Bawburgh Lakes as a project shows what anglers with a passion can achieve. NACA has as an organization left its mark in Norfolk and in Bawburgh Lakes we have left a legacy which we hope will be enjoyed by its new owners and Norfolk’s anglers well into the future.
